Averitt Lumber Mill Controls
Averitt Lumber Mill in Cadiz, KY burned. Between the fire itself and cleanup crews, all hydraulic and electrical controls were decimated throughout the facility. The mill had to be sawing in a very short time. Miles of charred conduit and wire were removed. DRM was called to assist Averitt engineering in getting this plant operational. Based on the limited time available, DRM installed a new motor control center with modern soft-starters to operate much of the heavy equipment. A plant-wide PLC system controlled each aspect of production while distributed I/O, located near the point of operation, eliminated much of the wiring. Debarkers, Saw Cabs, Graders, Sorters, Chippers and a host of conveyors were all integrated into a harmonious operation. Averitt engineering, not located at this facility, was able to view and maintain plant operations via remote log in.
Metal Building Manufacturing Line
A maker of prefabricated metal buildings contacted DRM to develop a controls package for an existing purlin line. Our scope included integration of a large punch press with five punch stations, automatically feed coiled steel, punch holes wherever needed, and shear sections from eight to forty feet lengths all while maintaining 0.03125” accuracy. DRM designed and built a PLC and Drives panel for line control. A PC based HMI imported an Excel build schedule. Multiple lengths and hole patterns could run in random quantities through the machine. Since many of the purlins were only different by a few inches, an industrial ink-jet printer was added to mark each part for proper in-field identification
