Project Profiles/ Application Experience Examples: Technologies Used

Timken Housed Bearing Manufacturing
The Timken Company had an existing assembly line that assembled various housed bearings.  Many of the electrical and CNC components had become obsolete.  DRM developed and installed a solution that was based on the original machine operation, but leveraged the newest technologies for safety and machine control.  Multiple operator interfaces allowed simplistic adjustments from various locations.  Nineteen CNC axes were replaced with a modern PLC.  Other improvements include an RFID tracking system and servo controlled linear actuators for multi-angle drilling and tapping.

  A.O. Smith Tank Manufacturing
DRM was selected to assist AO Smith with high speed Water Heater Tank assembly.  Automation is necessary to keep manufacturing costs at sustainable levels.  Safety PLC’s were used to operate all the machinery and protect operators.  Tank handling robots, capable of 420 pound payloads, positioned tanks within various welding machinery.  Robotic dual tank gripping tools allowed only minor processing delays while machines were unloaded and reloaded again.  Vision and servo motion rounded out these electrically complex lines.
